The Epidemics of the Middle Ages
Justus Friedrich Carl Hecker, a Berlin professor of the history of medicine, wrote three studies of the great epidemics of the Middle Ages, translated into English by Benjamin Guy Babington and gathered in this volume. The first describes the Black Death of the fourteenth century: its symptoms, its spread, its terrible mortality and its moral effects, from the flagellants to the persecution of the Jews. The second treats the dancing mania that swept Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. The third follows the English sweating sickness and its outbreaks on the Continent. As an appendix the volume reprints John Caius's sixteenth-century counsel against the sweating sickness. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
