Neither can afford it alone, so they take it together and, to split the cost further, add two strangers: the beautiful and bored Lady Caroline Dester, who wants to be left alone, and the elderly Mrs. Fisher, who knew Carlyle and lives in the past. At San Salvatore, among the wisteria and the sea light, each of them changes, and husbands arrive. Published in 1922, the novel is Elizabeth von Arnim's most purely happy book, a comedy about how sunshine and distance alter marriages, written by a woman who had two difficult ones.
