Against the then common view that the earthwork mounds of Britain were Saxon or Danish strongholds, she argued that the motte-and-bailey castles were introduced by the Normans, as private fortresses of the new lords. After examining Anglo-Saxon and Danish fortifications and the origin of private castles, she surveys the Norman castles of England, the motte castles of Wales, Scotland and Ireland and the stone castles of the period, drawing on documents, place names and field evidence. Her conclusions were widely accepted, and the book remains a landmark in the study of medieval fortification.
