The dryad

by Justin H. McCarthy

About 5 h 03 min of reading31 chapters

Simon of Rouen, a penniless soldier of fortune with a sword, a cudgel and a rusty lantern, tramps through the woods of Eleusis in the days when Frankish and Catalan adventurers ruled over medieval Greece, singing a song of his own making and caring nothing for the Greek gods whose ground he treads. In the Wonder-Wood he meets Argathona, a dryad out of the old world, and is drawn into a tale of enchantment, a tournament at Thebes, the Catalan Grand Company and a rose of the world. Justin Huntly McCarthy, an Irish novelist, playwright and former member of Parliament, published the romance in 1905. It is a light, lyrical fantasy in the manner of his popular If I Were King. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
