The dogaressas of Venice (the wives of the doges)

by Edgcumbe Staley

About 6 h 11 min of reading42 chapters

Edgcumbe Staley set out to tell a story he said had never been told in English: the lives of the women who were married to the doges of Venice over eleven hundred years. The book is arranged in chronological chapters, from the early dukes under Byzantine influence to the last dogaressa before Napoleon, and digresses freely into Venetian dress, ceremonial, guilds, convents and scandal. Staley was a popular historian rather than a scholar and his tone is enthusiastic, but he worked from the Italian sources, especially Molmenti, and he appends a complete roll of the dogaressas, a bibliography and an index. The book appeared in 1910. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
