The Coral Island, published in 1857 by R. M. Ballantyne, is a classic boys' adventure story of the Pacific. Ralph Rover, the narrator, is shipwrecked with two companions, the strong and steady Jack Martin and the joking Peterkin Gay, on an uninhabited coral island. The boys explore the reefs, lagoons and forests, learn to live on coconuts, breadfruit and fish, and enjoy a kind of paradise until cannibal islanders and pirates arrive. Ballantyne's book shaped the castaway story for generations, and William Golding later answered it in Lord of the Flies, borrowing the names of its heroes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
