The Conjure Woman

About 3 h 42 min of reading15 chapters

The Conjure Woman, published in 1899, is the first book of Charles W. Chesnutt, one of the first African American writers to reach a wide national readership. A Northern businessman settles in North Carolina to grow grapes, and his elderly Black coachman, Uncle Julius, tells him tales of slavery days on the old plantation, in which conjure, transformation and spells reveal the cruelty of slavery and the cunning of the enslaved. The volume includes "The Goophered Grapevine," "Po' Sandy" and "Hot-Foot Hannibal," and this edition adds three uncollected Uncle Julius stories and Chesnutt's essay on Southern superstitions. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
