The gay of the title means lively, and his life was certainly that: schooling in Britain, a first taste of war with the Carlists, meetings with King Alfonso, soldiering in Ireland, a voyage to New Zealand, spells as a newspaper proprietor, merchant, actor and policeman in Adelaide, and then a long career building the military forces of South Australia and the new Commonwealth. He recounts it all with humor, along with polo, hunting and steeplechasing, service in the South African War and his later commands in Australia.
