The Buccaneer: A Tale
The Buccaneer, first published in 1832, is a historical novel by Mrs. S. C. Hall, the Irish-born writer Anna Maria Hall, here in a one-volume edition of 1840. It is set in England during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, who appears as a character. Hugh Dalton, a daring buccaneer who has sailed for both Cavaliers and Roundheads, is drawn into the designs of Sir Willmott Burrell, who wants his help to be rid of a young woman he has wronged in France, while the boy Robin, devoted to Dalton, moves between the worlds of smugglers and Puritan households. The novel mixes adventure, romance and domestic scenes with a portrait of Cromwell's stern rule. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
