The Bishop of Cottontown, published in 1906, is John Trotwood Moore's novel of the cotton mills of the Tennessee Valley in Alabama, arranged in five parts named for the stages of the crop: the bloom, the boll, the gin, the lint and the loom. Its hero is Hillard Watts, an old horse trainer and preacher whom the mill hands call the Bishop, who fights the mill's owner Richard Travis and his recruiter Jud Carpenter over the children who are sent into the factory. Around them move the impoverished Westmores, the schoolteacher Alice whom Travis pursues, a horse named Ben Butler and a last race on which much depends. Moore wrote from anger over child labor and Southern nostalgia. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
