The Autobiography of Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Smith, Baronet of Aliwal on the Sutlej, G.C.B.
The Autobiography of Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Smith, edited by G. C. Moore Smith and first published in 1901, is the lively memoir of a British soldier whose career spanned half the globe. Smith tells of the expedition to Montevideo and Buenos Aires, Sir John Moore's retreat to Corunna and the long Peninsular War under Wellington, where after the storming of Badajoz he married Juana, a young Spanish noblewoman who followed him on campaign. He went on to the burning of Washington in 1814, Waterloo, frontier wars at the Cape of Good Hope, and the Sikh war in India, where his victory at Aliwal made his name. The editor's supplementary chapters complete the story of his later governorship at the Cape. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
