The American Occupation of the Philippines 1898-1912
The American Occupation of the Philippines, 1898-1912, published in 1912, is James H. Blount's indictment of his own country's policy, written from unusual knowledge. Blount went to the islands as an officer of volunteers in 1899, served in the war against Aguinaldo's republic, and then sat four years as a district judge in the provinces. His narrative runs from the arrival of Dewey and the alliance with the Filipino insurgents through the outbreak of fighting, the conduct of the war, the capture of Aguinaldo in 1901, which he calls the central fact of the occupation, and the civil government that followed. He argues that the Filipinos were fit for independence and that Congress should say plainly what it intended.
