Ten Days in a Mad-House; or, Nellie Bly's Experience on Blackwell's Island.
Feigning Insanity in Order to Reveal Asylum Horrors. The Trying Ordeal of the New York World's Girl Correspondent.
In 1887 the young reporter Nellie Bly accepted an assignment from Joseph Pulitzer's New York World: to have herself committed to the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island and report what went on inside. Ten Days in a Mad-House is her account. She describes practicing madness in front of a mirror, checking into a boardinghouse and convincing its residents, a judge and several doctors that she was insane, and then the asylum itself: cold baths, rotten food, freezing rooms, beatings and sane women locked away without hope of release. Her exposé led to a grand jury investigation and more money for the asylum. This edition adds other undercover sketches.
