Tales of Two Countries

Translated by William ArcherAbout 2 h 56 min of reading11 chapters

Tales of Two Countries brings together ten short stories by the Norwegian writer Alexander Kielland in the translation of William Archer, published in 1891 with an introduction by Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen. The two countries are Norway and France: Pharaoh and The Battle of Waterloo are set in Paris, while The Parsonage, The Peat Moor, At the Fair, Two Friends and the others belong to the west-coast towns and farms Kielland knew. His manner is light, ironic and exact, and his sympathies are with the poor against the pious and the comfortable, as in Hope's Clad in April Green and A Good Conscience. Kielland was a friend of Brandes and a figure in the Norwegian realist movement. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
