Tales of the Malayan Coast
From Penang to the Philippines
Tales of the Malayan Coast, published in 1899, is a collection of stories by Rounsevelle Wildman, United States consul at Singapore and later consul-general at Hong Kong, who dedicated the book to Admiral Dewey. Drawing on nine years in the Straits Settlements, Wildman writes of a Malay boy named Baboo and his tame tiger, of pirates and a crocodile hunt, of the sarong and the kris, of the white rajah of Borneo, of a man running amok, of a pig hunt, of the court of the Sultan of Johore and of a fight with Illanun pirates. The stories are adventures for young readers, colored by American interest in the Philippines after 1898. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
