About 11 min of reading11 chapters

Struwwelpeter is the book of cautionary rhymes that Heinrich Hoffmann, a Frankfurt physician, wrote and drew for his three-year-old son in 1844 because he could find nothing in the shops worth buying. Published in 1845 and in English by 1848, it presents Shock-headed Peter with his uncut hair and nails, Cruel Frederick who is bitten by the dog he torments, Harriet who plays with matches and is burned to ash, the boys dipped in ink for mocking a Black child, Johnny Head-in-Air who walks into the river, Conrad the thumb-sucker and the tailor's scissors, and Flying Robert carried off by his umbrella. The cheerful ferocity of the pictures has delighted and alarmed children for nearly two centuries. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first poems free.
