Strength and How to Obtain It
Eugen Sandow, the Prussian-born strongman who became the most famous physique of the 1890s, published Strength and How to Obtain It in 1897 and revised it several times. The first part sets out his system of physical culture: light dumb-bell exercises performed with concentration, the cold bath, tables of repetitions by age, advice for women and for the middle-aged, his grip dumb-bell and combined developer, and an account of his schools and correspondence courses, with letters and photographs from pupils. The second part is autobiographical, from a sickly childhood in Königsberg through his victory over the music-hall strongmen in London in 1889 and his tours of America to his performance at the time of writing and his measurements.
