Stonehenge and Other British Stone Monuments Astronomically Considered
Sir Norman Lockyer, the astronomer who identified helium in the spectrum of the sun, turned in later life to the study of ancient monuments, and this book records his attempt to read Stonehenge as an astronomical instrument. With the help of measurements made at the site in 1901, he argued that its main axis was aligned on the midsummer sunrise and used the alignment to estimate its date. He extends the inquiry to the stone circles and avenues of Stenness, the Hurlers, Dartmoor and Stanton Drew, and links them to the old divisions of the agricultural year, May Day and other festivals, sacred fires, trees and holy wells. It was an early work of what is now called archaeoastronomy. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
