South: The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition, 1914-1917
South, published in 1919, is Ernest Shackleton's own account of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The Endurance entered the Weddell Sea in late 1914, was frozen in, drifted for ten months and was crushed by the ice; the twenty-eight men camped on the floes, took to three boats when the pack broke up, and reached Elephant Island, from which Shackleton and five others sailed the James Caird eight hundred miles to South Georgia and crossed its unmapped mountains to fetch help. Every man of the ship's party survived. The book also tells the less fortunate story of the Ross Sea party, which laid depots for a crossing that never came. Shackleton writes plainly, with much drawn from diaries. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
