Shakespearean Playhouses
A History of English Theatres from the Beginnings to the Restoration
Shakespearean Playhouses, published in 1917 by Joseph Quincy Adams, who later became the first director of the Folger Shakespeare Library, is a history of the London theaters from the inn-yards of the 1570s to the closing of the playhouses under the Puritans. It proceeds building by building: the Theatre and the Curtain in Shoreditch, the two Blackfriars, Paul's, the Rose, the Swan, the Globe and the Hope on the Bankside, the Fortune, the Red Bull, Whitefriars, the Cockpit in Drury Lane and Salisbury Court. Adams reconstructs sites, owners, companies and lawsuits from documents, and a map of London places the playhouses with their dates.
