Robert Orange
Being a Continuation of the History of Robert Orange
Robert Orange, published in 1900, continues the story John Oliver Hobbes began in The School for Saints. It opens in London in October 1869, in the world of clubs, country houses and parliamentary intrigue, where Robert Orange, a young member of Parliament of mixed French and English birth, has just married Brigit Parflete. A revelation about her first husband makes the marriage impossible, and the novel turns on Orange's struggle between his love, his political career under Disraeli, who appears as a character, and a growing conviction that he is called to the Catholic priesthood. Hobbes, herself a convert, writes with epigrammatic polish about spiritual crisis in a worldly setting; Lady Sara De Treverell's own entanglements supply the subplot.
