River Legends, published in 1875 with illustrations by Gustave Dore, is a book of tales for children by E. H. Knatchbull-Hugessen, the Kentish member of parliament who became Lord Brabourne. The narrator, lingering by the river after a summer day at Eton, overhears Father Thames entertaining his visitor Father Rhine, and the two river gods trade legends from their banks: the Great Boar of Windsor Forest, Martha's Vengeance, the Family Feud, the Giant Bramble-Buffer, the Mannikins' Castle and Sir Roderick Fowle, a legend of the olden time. Druidesses, swan-sisters, giants, elves and a river-demon thief appear in turn. The author wrote more than a dozen such collections, and this one is remembered chiefly for Dore's forty engravings. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
