Quintus Claudius: A Romance of Imperial Rome. Volume 1
Rome under the emperor Domitian, in the last decades of the first century. Quintus Claudius, the son of a high priest and a young man of fortune and promise, moves through a city of senators, slaves, philosophers and a new sect of Christians meeting in secret, while the emperor's suspicion falls on anyone who stands out. Ernst Eckstein, a German novelist and classical scholar, conceived the book among the ruins of the Colosseum and published it in 1881; this first of two volumes appears in Clara Bell's English translation of 1882, with the author's historical notes. It belongs with Ben-Hur and Quo Vadis among the Roman novels of its generation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
