Priscilla's Spies is a comic novel by George A. Birmingham, published in 1912. Frank Mannix, a public-school boy nursing a sprained ankle, is sent to spend the summer with his uncle in a quiet bay on the west coast of Ireland. There his cousin Priscilla, who sails her own boat and takes no advice from anyone, decides that two strangers camping on an island are German spies and conscripts Frank into watching them. The plot is slight and the pleasure lies in the talk, the tides and Priscilla herself, one of the liveliest girls in Edwardian fiction. Birmingham, a Church of Ireland clergyman, knew the coast and the boats he was writing about. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
