Primitive culture, vol. 1 (of 2)

by Edward B. Tylor

About 12 h 06 min of reading16 chapters

Primitive Culture, published in 1871, is the book that founded anthropology as a discipline in England and gave the word culture its modern sense. In this first volume Edward B. Tylor sets out his method, the comparison of customs across the world to establish stages of development, and introduces the idea of survivals, practices that persist after the beliefs that gave rise to them are gone, with games, proverbs and superstitions as his examples. Chapters on emotional and imitative language, the art of counting and mythology follow, and the volume closes with the opening of his long treatment of animism, the belief in spiritual beings that he took to be the minimum definition of religion. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
