Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant, Complete
The Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant were written in the last year of the author's life, as he was dying of throat cancer and ruined by a Wall Street swindle, and published in 1885 and 1886 by Mark Twain's firm. Grant tells of his Ohio boyhood, West Point, the Mexican War, which he thought unjust, his failures in civilian life and then the Civil War from Belmont and Fort Donelson through Shiloh, Vicksburg and Chattanooga to the Wilderness, Petersburg and Appomattox. He writes about battles as he fought them, directly and without ornament, and his account of Lee's surrender is one of the great passages of American prose. The memoirs stop at the end of the war and say nothing of his presidency. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
