About 8 h 15 min of reading48 chapters

Moses Coit Tyler, the historian of American colonial and revolutionary literature, wrote this life of Patrick Henry for the American Statesmen series in 1887, basing it on letters and papers not used before. He tests the legends around his subject, asking for instance whether Henry was really as uneducated as reported, and follows his career from the Parsons' Cause and the Stamp Act resolutions to the Continental Congress, the speech in which he called for armed resistance, the gunpowder affair, his terms as governor of Virginia, and his opposition to the Constitution at the Virginia ratifying convention. Tyler admires Henry but keeps the eye of a careful scholar. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
