Parzival: A Knightly Epic (vol. 1 of 2)
Parzival, written around 1200 by the Bavarian knight and poet Wolfram von Eschenbach, is the medieval German romance of the Holy Grail that later inspired Wagner's Parsifal. This first volume of Jessie L. Weston's English verse translation, published in 1894, contains books one to nine. It tells of Parzival's father Gamuret and his adventures in the East, of the boy raised in the forest by his mother Herzeleide, ignorant of knighthood, his training by Gurnemanz, his marriage to Kondwiramur, and his failure at the Grail castle to ask the question that would have healed the suffering king Anfortas, followed by the adventures of Gawain and Parzival's meeting with the hermit Trevrezent. Weston adds notes and appendices. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first book is free.
