Palace and Mosque at Ukhaidir: A Study in Early Mohammadan Architecture

by Gertrude Lowthian Bell

About 6 h 21 min of reading15 chapters

Gertrude Bell, traveler, archaeologist and later a figure in British policy in Iraq, first visited the ruined desert palace of Ukhaidir, south of Baghdad, in 1909 and returned to survey it in detail. This study, published by Oxford University Press in 1914, describes the fortified palace and its mosque, compares them with other early sites such as Qasr-i-Shirin, and examines the origins of the early Islamic palace in Persian and Roman traditions. A final chapter weighs the evidence for the building's date. With plans and photographs, it combines field archaeology with architectural history, and shows Bell as a serious scholar. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
