Origin of Cultivated Plants

by Alphonse de Candolle

The International Scientific Series Volume XLVIII

About 11 h 15 min of reading14 chapters

Origin of Cultivated Plants, published in English in 1884 as part of the International Scientific Series, is the Swiss botanist Alphonse de Candolle's attempt to answer a plain question for each of the plants that feed and clothe us: where did it come from, and when did people start growing it? Species by species, from wheat, rice and maize to the potato, the vine, cotton, coffee and the garden vegetables, he weighs the evidence of botany, archaeology, history and the names of plants in ancient languages. He is careful to say when the answer is unknown. The book founded the modern study of crop origins, and its method, if not every conclusion, still holds. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
