Of Medicine, in Eight Books is the De Medicina of Aulus Cornelius Celsus, written in Rome in the first century AD and the only part of his encyclopedia to survive. It is the fullest account of Greek and Roman medical practice that has come down from antiquity. The first books treat diet, regimen and the history of medicine, the next describe diseases and their symptoms, and the last turn to pharmacy and to surgery, including operations for cataract, hernia and bladder stone, with the classic description of the four signs of inflammation. Celsus writes clear Latin for educated laymen. This translation was made by the Edinburgh physician James Greive and first published in 1756. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
