Northern Travel, published by the American poet and journalist Bayard Taylor in 1857, is the record of a journey he made through Scandinavia in the winter of 1856 and the summer that followed. Taylor crossed Sweden by sledge in December, pushed north through Lapland in temperatures far below zero to reach the Arctic Circle at midwinter, lived for a time among the Lapps and their reindeer, and returned to Stockholm before traveling in Norway and Denmark in warmer weather. He describes the long polar night and the midnight sun, the peasants and the gentry, the inns and the food, and the character of the Swedes and Norwegians as he saw them, with the eye of a practiced traveler.
