Translated by Constance GarnettAbout 7 h 46 min of reading22 chapters

My Past and Thoughts is the memoir of Alexander Herzen, the Russian writer and political exile, and this first of six volumes of Constance Garnett's translation was published in 1924. It covers his childhood and youth, from his birth in Moscow in 1812, the year of Napoleon's invasion, through an unusual household ruled by his aristocratic father, the shock of the Decembrist rising, the vow of lifelong struggle he swore with his friend Ogaryov on the Sparrow Hills, and his student years. It continues with his arrest in 1834 and exile to Perm and Vyatka, sketched with irony, warmth and a novelist's eye for character. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
