My own story
My Own Story, published in 1914, is Emmeline Pankhurst's account of the fight for votes for women in Britain up to the eve of the First World War. She describes her Manchester childhood among radicals, her marriage to the barrister Richard Pankhurst, her work as a Poor Law guardian, and the founding of the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903 with her daughters. The greater part of the book narrates the militant campaign: deputations to Parliament, the imprisonments, hunger strikes and forcible feeding, window-smashing, arson, and the Cat and Mouse Act under which she herself was released and rearrested a dozen times. It is a partisan document, written in the heat of the struggle, and valuable as such. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
