My Life and Work

by Henry Ford

About 6 h 13 min of reading22 chapters

My Life and Work, published in 1922, is the autobiography of Henry Ford, written with the journalist Samuel Crowther, when the Model T had made him the world's most famous industrialist. Ford tells of his boyhood on a Michigan farm, his first engines and cars, the founding of the Ford Motor Company and the decision to build one simple car for the multitude. He explains the moving assembly line, the five-dollar day, his views on wages, prices, banking, charity and the purpose of business, and ends with chapters on farming, railways and the future of industry. Ford's opinions are blunt and his account of his motives not always candid, but the book is a primary document of mass production. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
