Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, published in 1857, is David Livingstone's account of sixteen years in the interior, and it made him famous. Sent out by the London Missionary Society in 1841, he worked at Kuruman and among the Bakwena under the chief Sechele, crossed the Kalahari to Lake Ngami in 1849, reached the Zambezi, and from 1853 to 1856 made the journey that fills the second half of the book, from Linyanti north and west to Luanda on the Atlantic and back across the continent to Quelimane on the Indian Ocean, passing the falls he named for the queen. Geology, natural history, languages, the slave trade and the peoples he met are treated with equal curiosity. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
