Mighty Mikko: A Book of Finnish Fairy Tales and Folk Tales
Mighty Mikko, published in 1922, is a collection of Finnish fairy tales and folk tales retold for children by the American writer Parker Fillmore, who also adapted Czechoslovak tales. The first part offers wonder tales such as The True Bride, Mighty Mikko, The Three Chests, The Forest Bride, The Enchanted Grouse, The Terrible Olli and The Mysterious Servant, with brave younger sons, clever animals, enchanted brides and outwitted trolls. The second part is a cycle of animal fables about Mikko the fox and his dealings with the bear Osmo and the other creatures of the forest. Fillmore tells the stories in a lively, humorous style suited to reading aloud, and the book was illustrated by Jay Van Everen. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
