Memoirs of the Courts of Louis XV and XVI combines two accounts of the French court before the Revolution. The first is the memoir of Madame du Hausset, lady's maid to Madame de Pompadour, who recorded from her place behind the curtain the conversations, intrigues and domestic habits of Louis XV and his mistress, the visits of Quesnay and other men of letters, and the gossip of Versailles in the 1750s. The second is the secret memoir attributed to the Princesse de Lamballe, the devoted friend of Marie Antoinette who was killed in the September massacres of 1792, as arranged by an English editor, and it follows the queen from her arrival in France to the fall of the monarchy.
