Memoirs of General William T. Sherman, published in 1875 and revised in 1886, is the Union general's own account of his career, written in a plain style. He begins with his early service, his years in California during the gold rush, his failure as a banker and his time at a military academy in Louisiana on the eve of secession. The greater part of the book follows the Civil War: Bull Run, Shiloh, the Vicksburg campaign, Chattanooga, the long advance on Atlanta, the march through Georgia to the sea and north through the Carolinas, and the surrender of Johnston. Sherman reproduces his orders and correspondence at length and gives his views on war and the men he served with.
