Lucian's True History
Lucian of Samosata wrote his True History in the second century as a parody of travelers' tales and of historians who passed off fables as fact, warning at the outset that everything he is about to say is a lie. His narrator sails beyond the Pillars of Hercules and is carried by a whirlwind to the Moon, where he joins a war between the king of the Moon and the king of the Sun, then spends a long time inside a whale and visits the Island of the Blessed, where he meets Homer and the heroes. This edition reprints Francis Hickes's translation of 1634, with an introduction by Charles Whibley and illustrations by William Strang, J. B. Clark and Aubrey Beardsley. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
