Lorna Doone
A Romance of Exmoor
John Ridd is a boy at school in Devon in the 1670s when his father is murdered by the Doones, a clan of outlawed gentry who live in a hidden valley on Exmoor and rob the countryside. Years later, grown into a farmer of enormous size and few words, he climbs a waterfall into the Doone valley and meets a girl named Lorna, who is being raised among them and promised to the worst of them, Carver Doone. His love for her draws him into the Doones' secret, into the Monmouth rebellion of 1685 and finally into a reckoning on the moor. Blackmore published the novel in 1869, and it has fixed Exmoor in readers' imagination ever since. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
