Linnet: A Romance
In the Zillerthal in Tyrol, two Englishmen on holiday, the aesthete Florian Wood and the composer Will Deverill, hear a peasant girl called Linnet sing and recognize an extraordinary voice. She is carried off to the concert halls of Europe, becomes the famous Signora Casalmonte and makes a marriage that her Catholic faith will not let her undo, while Deverill's love for her and hers for him run up against God's law and man's. Grant Allen, a Canadian-born writer who had scandalized readers with The Woman Who Did, published the novel in 1900, the year after his death, and used it to argue once more about marriage and divorce against a backdrop of mountains and opera. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
