Life in the Iron-Mills; Or, The Korl Woman
Life in the Iron-Mills, published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1861, was Rebecca Harding Davis's first story and one of the earliest works of American fiction to look closely at industrial labor. In a smoke-choked river town of iron foundries, the narrator tells the story of Hugh Wolfe, a Welsh furnace worker with an untrained gift for sculpture, who carves a powerful figure of a woman out of korl, the waste left from smelting, and of his devoted cousin Deborah. When a group of visitors from the mill owner's world sees the statue, a single night sets off events that change both lives. The story is short, dark and compassionate, and it remains a landmark of realism. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
