Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania, to the Inhabitants of the British Colonies
John Dickinson, a Philadelphia lawyer, published his twelve Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania in colonial newspapers in 1767 and 1768, in response to the Townshend Acts. Writing in the character of a modest, well-read farmer, he argues that Parliament may regulate the trade of the empire but has no right to tax the colonies to raise revenue, whatever the form of the tax, and he urges the colonists to resist through united, lawful and peaceful means. The letters were reprinted throughout America and in Britain, and they made Dickinson one of the leading spokesmen of colonial rights. This edition adds an introduction and contemporary notices. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first letters are free.
