Johann Nikolaus Forkel, a music historian at Göttingen, published the first biography of Johann Sebastian Bach in 1802, at a time when Bach's music was known only to a small circle. Drawing on information from Bach's sons, Forkel describes the Bach family, his career in Weimar, Cöthen and Leipzig, his playing on the clavier and organ, his teaching, his character and his compositions, and closes with a tribute to his genius. This English version, published in 1920, is by the Bach scholar Charles Sanford Terry, who added notes and appendices, including a chronological catalog of the works. It is a short and affectionate book and a key document in the revival of Bach. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
