Insula Sanctorum et Doctorum, the island of saints and scholars, is John Healy's history of learning in early Christian Ireland, first published in 1890 and here in its sixth edition of 1912. Healy, then Bishop of Clonfert, begins with the state of learning before Saint Patrick and with Patrick's own writings, then devotes chapters to the great monastic schools: Clonard under Saint Finnian, Clonfert, Moville, Clonmacnoise, the foundations of Columba in Ireland and on Iona, Bangor, Clonenagh, Glendalough, and the schools of Munster and the west. A final chapter follows the Irish scholars who carried this learning abroad. The tone is devout and patriotic, but the book rests on wide reading in the sources. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
