Hypnerotomachia: The Strife of Loue in a Dreame

by Francesco Colonna

Translated by Robert DallingtonAbout 4 h 33 min of reading5 chapters

Poliphilo falls asleep and dreams that he is wandering through a dark forest, then through a landscape of colossal ruins, pyramids, obelisks, temples and gardens, each described in extraordinary architectural detail, in search of his beloved Polia. He meets nymphs who represent the senses, is led by them to the court of Queen Eleuterylida, and after many allegorical trials finds Polia, who tells her own story. The Italian original was printed by Aldus Manutius in Venice in 1499, in a strange hybrid language, with woodcuts that made it the most beautiful book of the Renaissance. This edition presents the partial English translation printed in London in 1592 under the name of Robert Dallington, in its original Elizabethan spelling, which covers the first part of the dream.
