History of the Peloponnesian War

by Thucydides

Translated by Richard CrawleyAbout 13 h 39 min of reading35 chapters

The History of the Peloponnesian War is Thucydides' account of the twenty-seven-year struggle between Athens and Sparta that began in 431 BC, written by an Athenian general exiled after a failure in command, who set out, as he says, to produce a possession for all time. The book contains the funeral oration of Pericles, the plague at Athens, the debate over Mytilene, the Melian dialogue on power and justice, the revolution at Corcyra and the catastrophe of the Sicilian expedition, and it breaks off in 411, seven years before the end. Thucydides excludes the gods and looks for causes in fear, interest and honor. Richard Crawley's translation of 1874 is still the one most readers know. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
