History of Linn County Iowa
From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time [1911]
History of Linn County Iowa was compiled in 1911 by Luther A. Brewer, the Cedar Rapids printer of the Torch Press, and Barthinius L. Wick, both members of the county historical society. It begins broadly, with the birth of Iowa, the mound builders and Indian peoples of the region and the geology of the county, then narrows to the first settlers of the 1830s, the founding of Cedar Rapids, Marion and the smaller towns, and the growth of churches, schools, newspapers, railroads and farms. Long sections record the county's part in the Civil War and gather biographical sketches, land assessments and registers of early residents. It is a reference work written for the descendants of the pioneers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
