Historic Jamaica
Historic Jamaica, published in 1915 for the Institute of Jamaica, is Frank Cundall's survey of the island's past through its places and monuments. After lists of governors, councils, chief justices and naval commanders, and an introductory sketch of Jamaican history, Cundall moves parish by parish, beginning with Port Royal and Spanish Town, then Kingston, St. Andrew and on around the island, describing forts, churches, great houses, public buildings and battlefields and recording the stories and inscriptions attached to them. Many epitaphs are transcribed in full. Illustrated with fifty-two pictures, the book draws on the institute's collections and remains a useful guide to the island's colonial history and its surviving landmarks. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
